CHAPTER

TWELVE

SONIA

After a terrible night where I didn’t doze off until sometime after two in the morning, and when I did sleep, it was restless, full of unsettling dreams, I finally wake up to discover it’s almost noon. Even then, I find it difficult to get out of bed.

I lie there for at least half an hour, then force myself to a sitting position before I finally stand and drag myself into the bathroom.

The reflection in the mirror startles me. Dark circles mar the skin beneath my eyes, and my complexion has taken on an even paler hue than it had when I awoke at Las Cruzes. That paired with my green irises makes me look like a zombie. Ugh!

I grimace as acid boils up into my throat, burning as it goes, yet the thought of eating has me practically gagging. Still, I do my best to look presentable before heading to the kitchen.

Diego glances up from his sandwich as I enter. “I was wondering when you were going to show up.”

I sigh, opening the fridge door to search for anything that seems remotely appetizing. “I’m exhausted.”

He stands and points to his chair. “Sit.”

“What?”

“Eat my sandwich. I only took one bite.”

Looking at his meal, I nod and do as he says. Mostly because I’m too tired to argue. But when I take it in my hands, my stomach clenches. So I set it down. “I can’t.”

“Why? I thought you liked turkey.”

“I know where my father is,” I blurt out, and almost immediately, the nerves wracking my body let up a little.

Diego’s eyes widen in surprise. “Where is…” he trails off as his gaze goes to the window behind me and he frowns.

Automatically, I turn but see nothing out of the ordinary. Only a man standing guard, as there has been since I arrived. “What is it?”

He moves closer to the window. “I don’t recognize him.”

His words have my body tensing all over again as I look from him to the armed guard. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not one of ours.” Diego stalks out of the kitchen, and I follow as he goes to the front door.

“Diego, wait!” I tell him as, suddenly, thousands of alarms go off in my head. But I’m too late.

When he opens the door, there are three armed men standing there. The one in the center, a short but muscular guy with jet-black hair pulled back in a ponytail, smiles at me. “Señorita Beltran. I was hoping to find you here.”

I feel as if the blood drains from my face at the chilling delight in his tone.

Diego takes a step back, his arms out protectively as he attempts to keep me behind him. “Who the fuck are you?” he asks.

“That’s not your concern as long as you stay out of my way. I’m just here for the girl,” the man says, not once taking his dark eyes off me. “Stand aside.”

“The fuck I will.” Diego takes another step back, forcing me to retreat as well.

I peek over my shoulder, my mind racing as I attempt to figure out a way to escape.
